Special Education - Exceptional Student Education

The undergraduate exceptional student education (ESE) program utilizes a field-centered preparation model leading to approval for State of Florida Certification in Exceptional Student Education with ESOL and Reading Endorsements. The exceptional student education (ESE) program is an initial teacher preparation program that will prepare teachers of students with disabilities in K-12 settings with coursework and field experiences that focus on the necessary skills to assess, plan, teach, and evaluate the education of students with high-incidence disabilities, including those who are ESOL. Students are prepared to teach learners with high-incidence disabilities from ages 5-22.

The Florida Education of Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) competencies are met throughout program coursework. The Reading Endorsement competencies are addressed and assessed in four program courses and with corresponding field experiences.

Students will learn about the specific cognitive, language, and social/emotional developmental needs for individuals with disabilities. Students will also learn about general and early education practices and curricula. Students will select cognates within the track that will provide strategic planning for advanced degrees in areas that serve individuals with special education, including Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), policy, advocacy, law, business, health services, mental health and public administration. These areas of interests will assist students who want to gain knowledge in Special Education, Educational Foundations, and Policy for their advanced degrees and do not plan to be teachers. (NOTE: This track does not result in a teacher certification.)

The Bachelor of Arts degree provides students who are interested in the humanities and social sciences with a broad overview of environmental issues, and prepares students for future study in fields such as environmental administration and law. Although the B.A. degree emphasizes the political, social and economic aspects of environmental issues, basic principles of environmental science are introduced. Students are required to choose a subject specialty (e.g., energy policy) or an appropriate minor (e.g., economics or biology).

Theatre (BFA) - Design

The BFA in Theatre Design is a very intense, full-time, demanding program offering specializations in scenic design, lighting design and costume design. Students work with award winning faculty designers in small group classes and one-on-one projects. The program includes Main Stage and Studio Theatre design opportunities, off-campus internships and a final senior project as well as workshops in resume and portfolio preparation. The Department of Theatre is a member of KCACTF (the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival) and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Admission is by portfolio and interview only. Theatre (BFA) - Performance

The BFA in acting is a very intense, full-time, demanding program which is designed to prepare student actors for a professional career or for further professional training. Students receive four years of performance training, along with taking a full complement of academic and technical theatre courses. They are afforded opportunities to perform in three different theatre spaces and to work with a variety of highly trained and qualified directors and designers. Students also receive instruction and practice in audition techniques and career preparation. The FIU Theatre Department is a member of KCACTF (the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival) and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Women’s and Gender Studies

In the Women's Studies major, interdisciplinary courses in Women's Studies and cross-listed courses in other disciplines enhance students' knowledge about women, feminism, and the significance of gender in diverse cultures and contexts. Students gain tools for analyzing the construction of women and gender, the relationship between gender and power and the intersection of gender with sexuality, nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, class, age and ability. Major courses foster intellectual exchange, creative pursuits, social justice advocacy, and global perspectives thereby contributing to the university's reputation for excellence and relevance in the 21st century. Students have the opportunity to conduct research with faculty on issues related to women and gender.
